Every Saturday on t he PGA Tour is known as moving day, and it lived up to it’s name yesterday.
David Toms (2001 PGA Champ) and Phil Mickelson (2005 PGA Champ) both made huge moves to put themselves into contention to hoist their second Wanamaker Trophy. Toms and Mickelson both played in the final group together in 2001, with Toms being victorious here at Atlanta Athletic Club.
U of I Men’s Golf Coach Mike Small made a pretty decent move yesterday, although he shot an even par round of 70, he managed to move up about 10 spots. This will be the second time Mike is the low Club Pro at the PGA Championship, the last was 2007 at Southern Hills.
A little side note, I was the top walker among the media on Saturday, logging some 28,000 steps, which translates to roughly 14 miles….putting me at a weekly total of 36 miles, with Sunday still to go; however, with it being hot outside, most of my time may be spent in the media center.
Anyway, back to the Championship. The first seven names on the leaderboard have never won a major, ever. David Toms sits at eighth, and in prime position to strike. I could easily see Steve Stricker move to the top spot, but he, and David Toms are going to need some help in the form of the top few players doing some heavy backing up.
Well, time to get some photos taken care of, but I will be back later with a more in-depth look into Saturday’s 3rd Round!
