Welcome to SISC Blogging

Greetings all and welcome to SISC -- the website -- where I hope to blog with you daily and discuss a variety of sporting events.

First things first, let me tell you that the January issue of SISC will hit the news racks this weekend (hopefully in most areas on Friday) and once again I believe (of course I'm partial) we have a great 48 pages of feature stories and info. You will see some new faces at SISC in the new issue. Feedback is especially important, good and bad, so let us know at jmuir@sisportsconnection.com what you like and don't like.

The first AP basketball polls are out and several Southern Illinois teams were ranked with many others receiving votes. In Class 2A the undefeated Eldorado Eagles are number four and Olney East Richland comes in at number eight. Other area teams receiving votes include Pinckneyville and Trenton Wesclin.

In Class 1A Madison is ranked fourth with Okawville is a number nine and Trico received votes.

I don't know about anybody else but with the advent of the new four-class system there is a totally different feel as we head into the second half of the basketball season. It seems that particulary the smaller schools in Class 1A have more spring in their step, knowing that they are competing on a level playing field. The knowledge that schools like Meridian, Waltonville, Trico, Sesser-Valier, etc. do not have to beat the Pinckneyville's and Nashville's of the world to get to Peoria has given renewed energy to many programs.

Certainly, the jury remains out on the new four-class system but with the new excitement I've seen thus far I have to say that so far I can't find any reason to complain. Also, I think it will be neat to broadcast a Class 1A and 2A super sectional double-header on March 4 from SIU Arena.
And of course getting the opportunity to call two state championship games in Peoria in the same day is also exciting. If we can get two Southern Illinois teams in those two games I'd really be revved up.

Speaking of broadcasts ...

WQRL (106.3) will broadcast all 15 games of the Benton Invitational Tournament beginning on Jan. 14 and also be sure to tune in for the 'unofficial' tip off the BIT when we broadcast the BIT Coaches Dinner on Sunday night at 6 p.m. I will be joined by Danny Czerwinski and we will have interviews with all the coaches, some former players and coaches and the 'man' who started the BIT 35 years ago, Rich Herrin, will also be in the house.
